This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
