A group of seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
